The Federal National Mortgage Organization (FNMA), typically referred to as Fannie Mae, is a United States government-sponsored enterprise (GSE) and, because 1968, an openly traded business. Established in 1938 throughout the Great Depression as part of the New Deal, the corporation's objective is to broaden the additional home mortgage market by securitizing home loan in the form of mortgage-backed safeties (MEGABYTESES), permitting lenders to reinvest their properties into more borrowing as well as in effect raising the number of lenders in the mortgage market by decreasing the dependence on locally based savings and loan associations (or "thrifts"). Its brother organization is the Federal Home Mortgage Home Mortgage Firm (FHLMC), better called Freddie Mac. As of 2018, Fannie Mae is ranked number 21 on the Fortune 500 positions of the biggest United States corporations by overall revenue.
